  • http://www.blasphemychallenge.comBrian Hier, and I deny the power, existence, efficacy, goodness, and heterosexuality of the Holy Spirit. The time has come for us all to cast away childish fantasies and face the truth--the truth that religious faith is not benign. It has disastrous consequences: it distorts realities, reinforces backward moralities, and compels people to murder. Through every medium available to us, we must attempt to revert the believers to rationality and peace-tolerant ideologies, thus significantly improving the human race's odds for survival. If we can't, we're probably fucked.Like never before the human race has the capability to, in the blink of an eye, irrevocably negate its own existence. Contemplating the capability is itself distressing, but it is made infinitely more so when one adds the very real existence of the motive to commit complete human specicide. It's bad enough we have the mere capability to utterly destroy ourselves, but still worse that some of us would like to. It could only be a matter of time when these two conditions, motive and capability, will meet. We're basically fighting for our lives and the lives of those unborn.Maybe you've never strapped a bomb to yourself or you've never killed an abortion doctor. Maybe you never will. Hell, you might even accept evolution as science! But, if you find within yourself any parallels with the beliefs of acknowledged murderers such as these, you're likely part of the problem. I don't think you'll ever stone anyone for trying to get you to stop serving God (which the Bible mandates); I don't think you'll go all Torquemada on my ass to try to get me to see things your way. But I do think you're obstructing those of us who are absolutely distraught at the horrible things wraught by religion in our world. Your non-violent, non-intrusive worship of potentially benevolent deities may not in itself be such a bad thing, but you are guilty by association. You lend a false air of validity to violent Bronze-Age mythology, stifling intellectual discussion on the subject. "Well that's just the way they've interpreted the Bible", you might say. Fuck that! If something can be "misinterpreted" so easily, why should someone believe in it at all? If the New Testament supposedly makes up for the cruel, vindictive God of the Old (which is an absurd argument anyhow), why leave the Old Testament in? Isn't it possible that someone might not have gotten the memo about the whole Biblical Supercession thing? Maybe Jesus did bring a doctrine of peace, why keep the old and obviously contradictory shit at all? If any of it required supercession, it follows, quite clearly, that it was penned by an imperfect hand. By supporting the Old Testament and other hostile philosophies--whether or not you embrace them yourself--you are not only aiding and abetting hate, you have also committed intellectual treason.Reprieve is not far off, but you must grant it yourself. No one can do it for you. Not God, not me, and certainly no court of law. This shit's on you; you have to fix yourself, and then we can fix the world together.Barring annihilation--by human means or otherwise--or some other unforeseen method of repression, the storm surge of reason and intellectualism will continue to push further inland. You can set up your barricades, hide in your basement, and subsequently starve to death, or you can ride this wave with the rest of us.Religion is at best a scientific and social hindrance, and at worst a moral and psychosociological cancer.
