  • Kevin apologizes to Paulina for dragging her into this mess. Paulina says it's all right, and then tells Kevin that if it means anything, she knows how he feels about his father. When she was growing up, she felt like she was never good enough because her parents gave her up for adoption, so she figured she must not have been the child they wanted. Kevin says that must have been rough for Paulina; at least he had his mom. Paulina replies that it must have been just as hard for Kevin to live in the same town as his father and not have his father acknowledge him. Kevin says it bothered him, thinking his father didn't want him, but it bothered him more that his father couldn't be with his mother because she loved him so much. He used to have this dream that his father would come bursting through the door with flowers for his mother and a bike for him and say that he was going to stay with them forever. Kevin tells Paulina that he forgave his father a long time ago, and now Jake will have to do the same. Paulina asks Kevin if that's why he came to Bay City, to check up on Jake. When Kevin hesitates, Paulina asks him what else is going on. Kevin says it's nothing he can talk about. When Paulina presses him, he says that he came to Bay City to prosecute Carl Hutchins, and that he has to find out if there's a link between Carl and Jake before the D.A.'s office or the cops or anybody else does, because Jake is in the biggest trouble of his life. Meanwhile, at the bar, Barney the bartender recognizes Jake as Ray McKinnon's son. Jake pushes Barney for answers and gets Kevin's story confirmed: Ray did have a girlfriend named Lucy Anderson, and they did have a son, named Kevin. Barney tells Jake he mustn't think badly of his father; his mother was a fine woman, but she got involved in the church to the point that she put it ahead of Jake's father. Barney was glad that Ray found Lucy; everyone liked Lucy, and Lucy loved Ray and was faithful to him to the end. So like it or not, Barney tells Jake, he has a brother. When Jake apologizes for getting so angry, Barney laughs it off, saying that Jake's a hothead just like his dad. Jake then remembers a fight he witnessed between his parents when he was a boy, in which his dad was angry at his mother for spending so much time at the church, and his mother wanted his dad to stay home from the bar because she thought a bunch of lowlifes hung around there and nothing good could come of them, to which his dad retorted that the people there liked him for who he was, not who his wife wanted him to be. Jake then remembers himself as a child yelling, "Dad!" after his mother told his father not to bother coming home that night because the door would be locked, and his father slamming out of the house. Thanks to Janie for the scenes.
