  • There aren't words... Abby would have been 5 years old on November 1, and she was with us for far too short a time, but her mark is permanent. Her sudden death on Tuesday has been so hard. Some memories...The mailman toy that she kept as her "baby" for years...Being stopped by a police officer to ask what kind of dog she was...The way she'd climb into chairs and make herself into a small ball...That "thump, thump, thump" at the top of the stairs, greeting us when we got home...Playing with toys while laying on her back and holding the toy with her paws...The way you had to watch your kneecaps when she was running with Rocket, Yoda, Callie or another friend...How much fun she had in swimming pools...A reluctant lap dog...Butch and dainty, she'd cross her legs and fold into a little ball, yet was rough and athletic...Sleeping and snoring, she regularly slept in way past our waking hour...Always laying like a frog dog...Barked only when asked, and then usually in a whisper...Curled up in front of the heater or in the hot sun...The best recall at the dog park...Plastic pots would not know their purpose post-plant if Abby hadn't shown them their use as a toy...Kayaking in between us, always excited to be near the water...Her straight, red-blonde fur meant that no black could be worn near her...Loved toddlers and small children, but her tail wagging was dangerous around them...Couldn't get enough of licking baby Jenna's feet...The nose prints still on the back windows of our car...The only dog in her flyball class to graduate to the next level...The amazing relationship she had with Rocket...A welcome guest in so many homes of friends and family...Those expressive, penetrating, adoring eyes will always be with us.
