  • We had a mouse eating the fruit in our fruit basket about every second night (ripe bananas and avocados being the favourite).. I saw the mouse a few times when I was up late watching tv - one night I cornered it and it dissapeared under my feet (this mouse has amazing powers). So I got your bog standard basic mousetrap and set that up - did that for about a week and didnt catch it.After about the second month I got serious - I went to Bunnings and bought a $20 trap kit with 3 snappers, 4 glue traps and various baits with instructions on how to lay them out strategically.. caught nothing but the fruit was still being eaten. One time I set the traps up in an absolute phallanx around the fruit bowl but it still managed to avoid them and get to the fruit.I tried trap plans I'd found on the internet (I'd built a bit of respect for my arch enemy and started on some non-lethal traps) - eg the toilet roll hanging over a table with some food at the hanging end and a large bin underneath - the idea being the mouse goes in and overbalances and falls in - I came up with traps based on that myself - including an elaborate setup where there was a plank leading up to the bin edge - with a tissue between the top of the plank and some food on the other side (so it should go for the food and fall through the tissue into the bin) - no luck! Now it was getting embarrasing - I was getting comments like 'I thought you were a bright guy Dylan, how can you not catch a mouse?'So - the gloves came off - I took it as a personal challenge - being the techy guy I am I decided to start a surveillance operation to see what my enemy was up to. So I bought a wireless night cam off ebay (for $80) and plugged that into a USB analogue capture device off a laptop - found some good motion detection security software. It worked a treat and I captured the mouse on camera. So I setup the traps again to see how it acted - the first night the food was on the trap too loosly and I got a video of it snatching the food and running off into a hole in the cupboard I didnt know was there - so I setup the glue traps etc under the hole the next night and reallly crammed the food on - this time i saw it repeatedly go for the food but pull back at the last second sensing the danger. So - next night I had the bait on hard but with a loose bit hanging off - and thats the time it set the trap off but got away.Since then it hasnt been back upstairs taking our food - but all day I hear this scratching above my head where I work - so something (mouse?) is living in the floorboards between the roof of my office and upstairs... I still hear it every day. Also at about the same time I almost caught it - we found a rat in the garage - we put out rat-sack and it ate that - and then died in the roof of our balcony - I still dont know how to get it out cos i can only see fur and a foot sticking out the vent holes - I'd have to remove a roof panel to get to it and I think it would stuff the roof (and that part of the roof is hanging over the edge so I cant even get to it easily.
