- As cheesy as the first minute is, it's completely necessary:"It's been:30 years since he saved her from drowning,23 years since they sailed away together and had a son,11 years since they quit pirating and settled in Shipwreck Cove,10 years since Elizabeth Swann left The Cove alone,(and there are) three minutes until the infamous Captain Jack Sparrow dies."This video is really two stories -- two conflicts -- in one. Jack and Elizabeth had the world in front of them; they were free as birds without a care in the world until one day when, in an attack from the EITC, their 12-year-old son is killed. Instead of seeking a terrible vengeance, Jack and Elizabeth simply numb. The color is gone from life, and they don't know how to comfort each other. Shouldn't Jack, the father, be strong? Shouldn't he refuse shedding a tear in front of his wife and just do his best to move on with life? And Elizabeth, shouldn't she stay strong as his equal? Surely, she couldn't dissipate like any other petty woman and still expect to be seen as the Pirate King. However, the death of a child still takes its toll, as Jack and Elizabeth decide to surrender their swords and settle in Shipwreck City, if not just temporarily.Within the year, Elizabeth has left.To Jack's horror, but not necessarily surprise, her need to live her life for her son in addition to Jack's stunning silence drives her away, finally. And so Jack ages and wastes away in Shipwreck City, fulfilling the duties as Pirate King for her and completely ridding himself of any youthful joy he might still possess until, literally, the day he dies.Song is "Brothers on a Hotel Bed," by Death Cab for Cutie.Named "Dear Jordan" not only because "Brothers on a Hotel Bed" just didn't quite fit, but because I entertained the idea that in the beginning, Jack may have been writing Elizabeth and Jordan (my name for their child) a letter. Or maybe it was just his will. Whatever.I don't really have a director's commentary for this one, but please pay attention to detail. It's like literature: there's foreshadowing, symbolism, and all that good stuff just like in any of my other works. And it's important. :)Because I know it will be asked...Yes, that is Captain Teague. No, he is not Captain Teague in this particular video, he's the elderly Jack Sparrow. I just hope to God Johnny Depp doesn't look like that in thirty years. :)And because I really, really want to make sure this comes across clearly...Jack does die in this video, even if it's not obviously expressed. One of the main themes of the video is light (= hope), so what do you suppose I mean by Elizabeth's only flickering candle extinguishing at the end...?Absolutely no copyright infringement intended; I just do this for fun. Most belongs to the Mouse -- the rest to Death Cab for Cutie. Think of it as fair use, if you will. ;)
