  • London: 6 December 2007Flash Alert!"I'm just sitting watching flowers in the rain" goes a song by the Move. That would have been more fitting than the Archies' Sugar Sugar which is what was actually played to the packed crowds thronging the Square and its new December funfair. Handing out carnations to the crowd was a nice touch and as flowers like a bit of a downpour, so London provided it. The pre-scattered flowers had to be removed due to said weather. Umbrellas, thick coats, sodden shoes and a wet train to Renee's dress lowered the fun-feel. On the plus side, the wind meant that the giant flowers blocking fans' view had to be moved for safety's sake. Result. A giant inflatable bee fronted the Empire and a costumed Bee entertained the crowd. Renee signed, chatted and posed for fans at the barricade and maintained a star's dignity-with-a-smile, even though she must've been frozen in that lovely black, sparkly, trained gown that was soaked by the rain. She looked stunning and was most gracious at the fan-line. The inclement weather curtailed her signing-time with the fans and some of the back-row folk weren't best-pleased it seemed. She did say a few words to the camera for us of course. Jerry too had a good time with the crowds though not at our area of the barricade. The press area was packed, and the stars but two, so inevitably the fans got less time than at other prems. There was a fear-filled moment. Our barrier almost fell as the crowds of crazy fans surge forward to thrust their books and photos over our shoulders to have a chance to get an autograph. Those are the worst times for having the camera whacked or having an elbow point poleaxe my shoulder. It's a rough old business. Producer Jeffrey Katzenberg (who tells us how much he loves the weather) and director Simon J Smith, (who told us his amazement at "and British boy from Watford with a premiere in Leicester Square") both signed and paused for us.
