  • Music by Victor Manuel ReyesFrom our base in beautiful Isabela Puerto Rico we once again explored the Porta Del Sol (Door To the Sun) region of the island. Stops along the highway and tiny mountain trails to us through Aguadilla, Cabo Rojo, Hatillo, Arecibo, Camuy, San Sabastion for the farmers market, and other places too many to mention.Everytime I go to Isla Del Encanto I end up with a lifetime of memories. Even though Puerto Rico is a US territory it is really different culturally than just about anyplace on earth. Sometimes it feels as though you are in Hawaii, sometimes it has a 'Jersey' feel, and other times you feel as though you have stepped into a courtyard in Spain.Puerto Rico also has diversity in the ecosystem. Rainforest in the east, mountains in the middle, desert in the west; all circled by 365 of the most spectacular beaches (playas) you can imagine. Even the beaches are diverse. White sand, gold sand, black sand. Atlantic Ocean in the north gives the surfers a challenge at times - some of the best surfing in the world can be had at Rincon or Surfers Beach. The south side of the island is Caribbean with its clear, still water. Playa Santa is a popular spot near Ponce.Often times when one goes to any number of the beaches you may find the only footprints in the sand is yours. That is part of the enchantment of Puerto Rico. You can always find a place to be alone or you can always find a party going on. It's up to you.The only drawback to Puerto Rico is the driving. The roads are almost always packed and even on the Autopista there are times when traffic just stops for absolutely no seeable reason. At other times it feels as though (when travelling the posted speed) that you are a disabled Indy car trying to finish the 500 series.I love Puerto Rico, the people, the views, the weather, the island time. There isn't much I don't like about being there and my heart pines to go back even before the wheels of the plane have left the concrete.
